The idea that hard work should come at the cost of sleep is an outdated approach because sleep plays such a critical role in our general health. Most sources indicate that an individual should get a minimum of seven hours of sleep a night. However, one in three Americans aren’t getting enough sleep. But it’s not just the number of hours that’s important, it’s the type of sleep you’re getting. You can get fewer hours only if you are getting restful, uninterrupted sleep. This author, host, and philanthropist reportedly gets a full eight hours of sleep every night. Usually between the hours of 10pm and 6am and tries to focus on gratitude before she sleeps. She keeps volumes of gratitude journals by her bed because the last thing she does before bed is jot down five things she’s grateful for. 

Jeff Bezos

Amazon’s founder claims that, while it can be at times difficult, he also tries to get a full eight hours of sleep. He chooses to go to bed early, wake up early and spends a casual morning reading the newspaper and drinking coffee. He also makes a point to schedule his most important meetings at 10am. That way he has most of the day to think about it and solve any problems.

Jack Ma

The former Executive Chair of Alibaba doesn’t let the day’s stress and worries prevent him from getting a good night’s sleep. Without a good night’s sleep, whatever problems he has will still be problems tomorrow. With a good night’s sleep, they can become solutions.

Elon Musk

Regardless of managing multiple businesses, Musk claims that he regularly gets about six hours of sleep each night. On an episode of The Joe Rogan Experience, he stated that he doesn’t find himself wanting more than six hours.

Arianna Huffington

The media mogul and subsequent author of The Sleep Revolution learned the importance of sleep after collapsing due to exhaustion. She also requires a full eight hours of sleep, however, her bedtime routine might strike some as odd. She removes electronics from her room to ensure that she doesn’t have access to screens and then reads a physical book before bed.

Tobi Lutke

Founder and CEO of Shopify is strongly in favor of maintaining a work-life balance and sticks to the recommended eight hours of sleep. With this in mind, he is usually home from work at 5:30pm and spends the evening connecting with his friends and children. This gives him plenty of time to get the rest he requires.

Warren Buffet

As one of the world’s top investors, Buffet greatly values his sleep and is usually in bed by 10:45pm. This ensures he can enjoy a full eight hours of sleep. This is important because so much of his day is spent reading, which requires a lot of mental energy.

Bill Gates

The Co-Founder of Microsoft, who values the benefits of sleep and its critical role in health and creativity, talked in his blog about pulling all-nighters in his youth. He knew he wasn’t as sharp or responsive. And after reading Why We Sleep, he has since prioritized his nightly routine. His advice for getting a good night’s sleep is to remove all LED lights from your bedroom, limit alcohol intake, take a midday nap, and keep the temperature around 64 degrees.
